Verzegnis stands on a plateau rich in orchards, beech and chestnut trees and is one of the oldest towns in Carnia. The etymology of Verzegnis is uncertain, however, it could be nothing more than the phraseme "verza e gnaus" (literally "cabbage and turnip," in Carnic), therefore the origin could be traced back to, for example, the products of a possible cultivation prevalent in that area in the past.
An interesting historical reference to the ancient role of Verzegnis in Carnia is the remains of a tower (on the Mazeit hill, in the hamlet of Villa) brought to light in archaeological excavations.
Not far from Verzegnis, there is an artificial lake, ideal for sunbathing, and Sella Chianzutan, an environment of great scenic appeal, where it is possible to visit the Red Marble quarries. In particular, an important industrial archaeology project has been carried out for the recovery and enhancement of the Lavoreit Ros quarry and the Historic Marble Road of Verzegnis.
