The parish church of Tarvisio was established in 1399 on the site of an older, 11th-century church; it assumed its new aspect in 1445. In 1905, it became a decanal church, a role previously held by the Camporosso parish church. On 20 February 1932, following the Quo Christi fideles bull of Pope Pius XI, the whole deanery of Tarvisio passed from the diocese of Gurk to the archdiocese of Udine.
Among the various extensions that changed the church, the most important were those carried out between 1959 and 1962, when the building was extended towards the square.
