Ever since 1895, when the Lumiere brothers first screened ten one-minute films in Paris, the development of cinematography has increasingly attracted the interest of numerous composers. The 17 scenes that make up L'Album de Madame Bovary of 1933 – Milhaud's original transcription of the soundtrack he composed for J. Renoir's film Madame Bovary – well represent the conflicting emotional outbursts of the protagonist Emma. The cycle of four pieces Stars-Four sketches for Piano was written by Castelnuovo Tedesco as soon as he arrived in New York, and dedicated to four Hollywood divas such as Greta Garbo, Deanna Durbin, Marlene Dietrich and Shirley Temple. The piano transcription of Casanova’s score is Rota's only original piano transcription of Fellini’s film music.
