Forni di Sotto is the largest municipality in Carnia and is supposed to have been inhabited since the pre-Roman era. The town was completely razed to the ground in 1944 by the Nazis, who set fire to it in retaliation. Of its past, Forni di Sotto preserves the fountains of its three hamlets into which it was divided. The post-war town was rebuilt around these.
