Behind the pseudonym Buffalo Bill stands Colonel William Frederick Cody, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Nebraska congressman, and more, accumulating a fame that oscillates between historical truth and myth. After portraying himself on stage for eleven years, from 1883 he rose to prominence in the Wild West Show, whose impact on the public, shaped by a skilful and extensive use of media tools of the time, would define the image of the American West. With the Wild West Show, Buffalo Bill arrived in Italy and in 1906 also visited Udine and Trieste, when the twilight of an extraordinary era and the gradual decline of a pre-media international star, a victim of his own persona, were already visible. Yet, the enthusiasm of the crowds never waned, and to this day this multifaceted man remains one of the most celebrated and controversial figures in American history.

Comeglians is part of the “Authentic Villages of Italy” association. For many years, thanks to its strategic position at the confluence of three valleys, it was an important centre for collecting and distributing wood. In the town’s hamlets, there are some historic mansions like Cjasa Botêr and Palazzo De Gleria. Located on a rocky spur is the parish church of San Giorgio (14th century), whose interior preserves precious furniture and German tapestries. It can be reached from Comeglians via a trail that climbs up through the woods. An evocative road that climbs to Mount Crostis leaves from the village of Tualis: the “Panoramica delle Vette”, a route well loved by cycling enthusiasts that reaches an altitude of 1,900 metres and offers a breathtaking view over the surrounding mountains.
