The current construction of the cathedral of San Martino in Tolmezzo was built by demolishing the former church in 1750, according to a design by architect Domenico Schiavi. It was consecrated in 1764.
The interior of the Tolmezzo cathedral consists of a single, large nave with lateral chapels and a raised presbytery. There are three frescoes on the ceiling attributed to Antonio Schiavi, brother of the architect. In addition, there is a precious cycle of frescoes that can be dated to 1731-32 by Nicola Grassi. These were commissioned by Jacopo Linussio and depict the Apostles, the Madonna, the Saviour, Saint Hilary, and the Crucifixion. Additional, precious objects enrich the important sacred place.
